## Three reasons to pick Mobster

### 1. The phone is yours, and so is its state

Device Farm gives you a physical device hosted by AWS. Mobster drives the iPhone you already own, plugged into your Mac, with the app and accounts that are on it. `mobster verify --device` checks an app you already installed, without clearing its data.

### 2. Your coding agent writes the check

Device Farm runs tests that you upload: Appium, XCTest or XCTest UI on iOS. A Mobster check is plain-English steps plus what must be true. Your coding agent writes it, runs it over MCP and reads a verdict from assertions on the accessibility tree, never from a model. On 17 October 2026 an agent wrote a passing Mobster check in a median 55.5 s (n = 3). [Coding agents](https://docs.mobster.dev/mcp-server) lists every Mobster tool.

### 3. A replay costs seconds, not device minutes

Once a check passes, Mobster replays its recorded steps with no model call. On an iPhone 15 Pro over USB, a two-step check replayed in a median 10.3 s with 0 model calls and $0 (10 of 10, 17 October 2026). Device Farm’s pay-as-you-go rate is $0.17 for each device minute, and a $250 slot buys unmetered use of one device at a time.

## Where Device Farm is the better pick

- **Parallel hosted devices.** You buy slots and run many devices at once. Mobster runs on the phones and simulators on your desk.
- **Android and the web.** Mobster drives iOS only.
- **Nothing to set up on a device.** You upload an app and tests. Mobster’s setup took 5 min 26 s on a never-used iPhone 16.
- **A free trial in device minutes.** 1,000 once, as a limited-time offer.
- **Your private network.** Device Farm’s test hosts and devices can connect to your VPC.
- **No Mac to run.** Device Farm executes in the cloud, from any CI.

## Using both

Run Mobster while your agent builds a screen. Run your Appium or XCTest suite on Device Farm before a release. Mobster keeps its checks in `.mobster/checks` and never touches your test files.

## Questions

- ### Is Mobster an AWS Device Farm alternative?
For iOS apps you build on a Mac, yes. Mobster checks your app on the iPhone beside you and on simulators, with checks your coding agent writes. Device Farm is the better fit when you need hosted devices in parallel, Android, or tests inside your AWS network.
- ### How much does AWS Device Farm cost?
On 17 October 2026 its pricing page lists $0.17 per device minute pay as you go, $250 per device slot a month for unmetered testing, and private devices from $200 a month. A new account gets a one-time free trial of 1,000 device minutes, which AWS marks as a limited-time offer in place of the standard 250.
- ### Which iOS test frameworks does Device Farm support?
Appium, XCTest and XCTest UI, plus a built-in fuzz test on Android and iOS. Mobster runs its own plain-English checks and leaves your XCTest and Appium files alone.
- ### Can I use Mobster and Device Farm together?
Yes. Use Mobster while your agent builds the screen, on your iPhone and simulators, and keep Device Farm for the hosted devices and parallel runs you need before a release.
