phone-harness alternative: Mobster vs phone-harness

Mobster reads controls by name, asks before it sends and runs several iPhones for $12 a month, $99 a year, or $149 once. phone-harness is free and open source.

Facts about phone-harness read on , from the sources at the end.

Pick Mobster if your agent works on your own iPhone and you want it to read buttons by name, stop for your OK before anything is sent, watch and hear what the phone plays, and run on several iPhones at once, for $12 a month, $99 a year, or $149 once.

Pick phone-harness if you need Android or a cloud phone, or you can’t turn on Developer Mode.

Three reasons to pick Mobster

1. It asks before it sends, in code

When a task would send, buy, post, delete, like or follow, Mobster’s agent stops and shows you the app, the person and the exact text. Nothing happens until you click. With no answer in 10 minutes, the action doesn’t happen. Every action is written to Mobster’s journal before it reaches the phone, and a send, post or purchase whose outcome is unknown is never sent again on its own.

phone-harness asks your agent to ask. Its skill says: “Stop and ask before anything outward-facing or hard to reverse: sending, posting, following, purchasing, deleting, changing settings.” Its Hermes plugin asks before each script it runs.

2. It reads your iPhone by name, and hears it

Each step, Mobster reads the accessibility tree, the labelled controls VoiceOver reads, with their values, roles and on or off state. It taps “Send” by name and knows a switch is on. On a USB iPhone it also watches and hears: it keeps a frame at each new scene, reads the captions and turns the speech into text, all on your Mac.

phone-harness reads the iPhone with Apple’s Vision OCR on the iPhone Mirroring window. Its README says: “OCR sees text, not icons. Unlabeled controls need a screenshot and a vision-capable model.” and “DRM video renders black.”

3. It has none of iPhone Mirroring’s limits

Mobster drives every iPhone you plug in, and iOS simulators, at the same time. It works in the EU.

Apple’s iPhone Mirroring, which phone-harness uses for your iPhone, works with one Mac and one iPhone at a time, needs the iPhone locked and near the Mac, needs the same Apple Account on both, and isn’t available in the European Union.

Measured on the same iPhone

We’re running both on one iPhone and one Mac: 14 read-only tasks, three runs each, Claude Sonnet 5.5 in every arm, Mobster’s agent against Claude Code with phone-harness 0.3.2 and Claude Code with Mobster’s MCP server, graded blind. The table lands here with its date, the tasks and every run, losses included.

Where phone-harness is the better pick

  • Setup. No Xcode, no Developer Mode, nothing on the phone: pair iPhone Mirroring, grant two macOS permissions, install with uv.
  • Android. Over adb, from macOS, Linux or Windows.
  • Cloud phones. Phone Harness Cloud rents phones at 5¢ a minute, up to 8 at once per account, with $5 of starting credit.
  • Price. The harness is free and open source under MIT.

Using both

phone-harness reaches your iPhone through the Mirroring window, and Mobster through WebDriverAgent on the cable. Mirroring needs the iPhone locked and Mobster needs it unlocked, so one works at a time.

Questions

  • Is Mobster a good phone-harness alternative?

Yes, for an iPhone. Mobster reads controls by name instead of OCR, asks before it sends in its own code, watches and hears what the phone plays, and drives several iPhones at once. It costs $12 a month, $99 a year, or $149 once and needs Developer Mode and a cable. For Android or a cloud phone, phone-harness covers what Mobster doesn't.

  • Why does Mobster need Xcode and Developer Mode when phone-harness doesn't?

Mobster drives the iPhone through WebDriverAgent, a runner built on Apple's XCTest, which runs only with Developer Mode on and an Apple signature that Xcode makes. That runner is what lets Mobster read each control's name, role and state. Mobster for Mac builds, signs and renews it for you. phone-harness reads the iPhone Mirroring window instead, so it needs none of this and sees the screen as pixels and OCR text.

  • Can I use Mobster from Claude Code like phone-harness?

Yes. Mobster for Mac adds its MCP server to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and Codex with one button, and ships a Claude Code plugin and skill. Your agent can drive the iPhone itself or hand a whole task to Mobster's agent with phone_task.

  • Can Mobster use an iPhone that isn't next to my Mac?

Yes, with Mobster Remote: Claude, ChatGPT and other assistants hand tasks to Mobster for Mac at home, which drives the iPhone on its cable, and approvals stay on your Mac. The phone stays with the Mac. phone-harness rents cloud phones for that, at 5¢ a minute.
